Imagine my delight when a Japanese friend told me about new restaurant Soseki‘s ‘soft opening’. I love hearing about new restaurants anyway, but when I found out that the food was going to be free during this period, I immediately made two reservations for this week – lunch for one, and dinner for two. It’s rare for me to eat twice at a restaurant within such a short space of time, but I thought it might give me a better overview of kaiseki kappo, which ‘originated in the high-class restaurants for wealthy merchants living in nineteenth century Osaka’ and is a more informal, less expensive version of the classically prepared kaiseki ryori…

Burmese restaurant Mandalay has been at the top of my restaurant wishlist for a while now. It’s always sounded intriguing to me. Not only are the owners Burmese-Norwegian, they also run a little hotel nearby. And I’ve never had Burmese food before. As Time Out included it in its Top 50 London Restaurants list earlier this year, I thought I’d go and investigate with a friend.

Baozi Inn, recently opened in Chinatown, was recommended by a friend who tries all the latest Chinese restaurants before I do (which really helps me!). It also received a positive review in Time Out, so off I went to investigate, accompanied by a Japanese friend…

Pho is a Vietnamese cafĂ©. Well, two now actually. The original one opened in Clerkenwell in 2005, after its English owners wanted to bring Vietnamese food to London, and there’s a second branch near Oxford Circus. This is the one I visited…

This subject has been close to my heart for many years. Although a Chowhounder recently called me a ‘high-end diner’, I don’t think that’s the case. I do admit to an occasional weakness for expensive restaurants, but only if the food warrants a visit. Dining out is actually quite a rarity for me, as I eat home-cooked food, courtesy of my husband, most nights of the week. But when I go to restaurants in London, easily one of the world’s most expensive cities, this is what I usually do:…
