This chain of churrascarias (Brazilian steakhouses) is pure carnivorous heaven! Open since 1975, there are now even branches of Porcão in New York and Miami. A relatively expensive (by Brazilian standards) ‘all you can eat’ restaurant for a fixed price, there is a vast selection of buffet food, including many amazing salads (try ‘millionaire’s salad with tender palm hearts!), fish, sushi, amazing desserts and of course feijoada (Brazil’s national dish of meat, black beans, rice and greens)…

A Polonesa is a traditional, old-fashioned Polish restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, just minutes away from the beach. Popular with my husband and his Brazilian friends who are all regulars, it’s one of the better restaurants in the area, offering good value for money, a very laid-back atmosphere and friendly service by Polish-Brazilians. I’ve eaten here several times and enjoyed it immensely.

A Brazilian-Italian friend living in Sao Paulo took us to her local, L’Osteria del Generale, a down-to-earth Italian restaurant in the trendy Jardins district. Colourful football shirts hung from every inch of the ceiling, giving it a relaxed and laid-back look. The waiters were friendly and jolly, while the atmosphere at both lunch and dinner was buzzing but not raucous, so that we were able to have a proper conversation.
