I had high expectations of Vietnamese eaterie Khoai Café, so when I finally went, it was a bit of a let-down to be honest. The expedition started off badly too. We went to the Crouch End branch and even though we used to live near there, we wandered up and down trying to find 6 Topsfield Parade. I’m ashamed to say that I was snappy with the waiter when I phoned to ask for directions, and was all the more embarrassed when he knew it was me the moment I walked in the door. And he even gave me a menu to take home, to save me having to write everything down in my notebook…

Before I go on any trip, I like to plan where and what to eat during my travels. I can do ‘spontaneous’ now and then, but I generally prefer to know where I’m going to be eating! As the Olympics start in a few days, I thought I’d write up my notes on the Beijing restaurants and eateries that I hope to visit in October as part of a two week trip to Hong Kong, Macau and Beijing. What do Chinese restaurants offer the discerning vegetarian? I’ve been giving this a lot of thought lately, because we’re going on a two week trip to Hong Kong, Macau and Beijing this October, and I’m going to have to do some serious research to find suitable eateries for vegetarian husband. I’ve been thinking about all the Chinese restaurants we’ve visited in London, and what dishes he particularly enjoys, so that I can find similar (or far better!) ones in China. Although I lived in Beijing for two years and have visited Hong Kong many times in the past, it’s been over a decade since my last trip, and I never had to worry about feeding a vegetarian!

My mother and I haven’t lived together for many years now, so I always look forward to her home-cooked meals. They remind me of my childhood, so when we see each other, I always ask her to cook the same few favourites that I grew up on. I never get bored of them.

Every Chinese family has their special recipes and slightly different methods of preparing a particular dish. Dinner table conversations are all about where the ingredients were bought, and how each dish was created. Here are my favourites (click on each for full recipes). Together, they would make a substantial meal, served with steamed white rice. In fact, this would be my perfect home-cooked meal!…
