I’ve heard that the Taste Festivals are a good opportunity to try cuisine from some of the top restaurants in both the UK and Ireland. But I’ve been somewhat reluctant to attend Taste of London in previous years, thinking that the entrance fee and cost of ‘crowns’ (the currency at the festivals) was rather steep. I love high-end restaurant food, but food prepared alfresco for the masses? Surely this would have a detrimental effect on the quality of the food? A friend convinced me though that it was unmissable. So off I went to Regent’s Park yesterday evening, when rain threatened to make the event wet and miserable…

Over the last twenty years, I’ve been fortunate enough to eat some incredible food around the world (I call this ‘traveleating‘). I just wish I had written about these experiences and taken photos. There are places that I won’t see again, restaurants that no longer exist, and special home-cooked meals that can’t be replicated. But the past is the past, and I look forward to visiting plenty of exciting destinations in the future, armed with my notebook and camera!

So, here are my top 20 foodie travel experiences, in no particular order than chronological…

My recent trip to Bologna, Italy was the first one I’d ever made for the specific, sole purpose of eating, as opposed to sightseeing, shopping or visiting friends, with good food as a bonus. My husband’s been on an eating trip to Bologna though, so when he suggested it, I jumped at the chance of travelling to eat, or ‘traveleating‘, as I call it. This is after all what World Foodie Guide is all about!

A few weeks ago, I mentioned some restaurants that I’d researched for our eating trip to Bologna, Italy (which ended yesterday). In total, we visited six restaurants, all of which were booked a month in advance. This is the first review, of our favourite one, Trattoria Meloncello. It’s received one of the highest ratings I’ve ever given a restaurant – 9.5/10. In short, it’s a perfect gem of a place, and highly recommended.
