This is the second of three posts on where I plan to eat in Beijing, Hong Kong and Macau during my two week trip in October. Part of the fun of traveleating is the planning stage, and more than anything, I love researching local food shops, markets, cafés and restaurants. As I’ve exhausted myself on Where To Eat In Beijing – the list is still only partially complete – I thought I’d write about where to eat on the day trip to Macau from Hong Kong. Then onto the huge task of trying to finalise the Hong Kong list!

I had high expectations of Vietnamese eaterie Khoai Café, so when I finally went, it was a bit of a let-down to be honest. The expedition started off badly too. We went to the Crouch End branch and even though we used to live near there, we wandered up and down trying to find 6 Topsfield Parade. I’m ashamed to say that I was snappy with the waiter when I phoned to ask for directions, and was all the more embarrassed when he knew it was me the moment I walked in the door. And he even gave me a menu to take home, to save me having to write everything down in my notebook…

Burmese restaurant Mandalay has been at the top of my restaurant wishlist for a while now. It’s always sounded intriguing to me. Not only are the owners Burmese-Norwegian, they also run a little hotel nearby. And I’ve never had Burmese food before. As Time Out included it in its Top 50 London Restaurants list earlier this year, I thought I’d go and investigate with a friend.
