After discovering reasonably priced, family-run Otello alla Concordia, we ate here three lunches in a row. On the last occasion, we brought friends with us, who also enjoyed it. As we had neither the time nor money to search for a different lunch venue every day, this suited us very well, particularly given its central Rome location near the Spanish Steps. Our waiter, who served us all three times, became very friendly too.
Otello alla Concordia is set off a side street and you can choose one of the tables in the covered courtyard or inside the restaurant. I would definitely recommend eating in the courtyard, as it can get very crowded inside with both locals and tourists (mostly Japanese and American). During the last lunch, there was even a fist-fight between two waiters, which proved to be quite entertaining for our guests.
The food here is simple but well prepared. I had a gigantic meat dish the first time (whether it was veal or roast lamb, I really can’t remember), then pasta the other two times. The buffalo mozzarella was to die for, as it was incredibly fresh and creamy. I’ve not had it like this anywhere else. We also tried some scarola (or escarole), leafy greens fried in garlic, after seeing an Italian diner tucking into a plate of it. It was delicious!
Do avoid the tourist menu, which is translated into various languages, and order from the menu aimed at ordinary Italian diners. You’ll be surprised at how vastly different the two menus are!
