Martin Wishart is a real treat, with its one Michelin star (I believe it was the first Edinburgh restaurant to be awarded one) and location in the hip Port of Leith, a short taxi ride from the city centre. The interior is simple but stylish, and the service impeccable - polite, friendly and inconspicuous.
Skipping the tasting menu (£60), which would have taken too long, we went a la carte instead (£50 for 3 courses). I honestly can’t remember exactly what I had, probably because of the champagne, but it was beautifully presented and incredibly delicious, using the freshest Scottish ingredients - scallops, lobster, halibut, lamb, hare, woodcock and so on. There were amuse-bouches between each course to whet the appetite even more, and pre-dessert before the real dessert.
The three course lunch menu, at the bargain price of £22.50 is excellent value for money, while the substantial vegetarian menu would tempt even carnivores.
In Edinburgh, try my other favourites as well - The Grain Store and Creelers
